PUPILS across Ayrshire are being given the chance to learn stand up comedy from a top comedian.

Marjolein Robertson, a comedian, improviser and storyteller, will provide her skills to students across the town to learn about what it takes to be a successful stand up act.

Shetlands only female comedian is offering senior students the chance to craft a stand-up comedy routine under her guidance as part of Book week Scotland run by the Scottish Book Trust, the national charity transforming lives through reading and writing.

Performing in three schools across South Ayrshire at St Matthews Academy, Saltcoats, on Tuesday November 20; Marr College and Prestwick Academy on Wednesday November 21 and Carrick Academy, Maybole, on Thursday November 22, she he will initially perform a short routine for the students before beginning her workshops on writing stand up comedy material.

The workshop will involve a host of training techniques such as discussion on comedy, breaking down some of the gags from her performance and explaining how she fell into the comedy industry.

In addition, she will be on hand to show students her writing techniques and they will then have the opportunity to come up with their own stand up routine on the things they love and hate.

From learning her trade in New York, the comedian has been a regular contributor to BBC Scotland’s award-winning digital platform for new talent ‘The Social’ since 2016.

She said: “Writing comedy is a fantastic way to inspire anyone to pick up a pen, type on a keyboard or even jot down ideas and jokes on their phones. It's quick and easy and over time can grow into a craft as you begin to stitch material together.

“I also used to be the bairn in the classroom who was always scolded for constantly talking. So, to get the opportunity to stand up and tell jokes in each school I visit and be allowed to, is like a dream come true.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to share writing techniques with schools around Scotland and getting more voices from all over the country to give comedy a go.”
