Plans to develop Prestwick Airport into a modern aerospace centre are well underway as South Ayrshire Council indicated that proposals are in advanced stages.
An international corporation has been open to the innovation centre and are soon to be confirmed as main investors for the project. Prestwick Airport has confirmed they will provide match funding for the core airfield infrastructure in relevant size, while the two parties work with South Ayrshire Council.
The project is part of the Ayrshire Growth Deal which aims to transform the economy and provide more employment opportunities. Already, talks have been backed by Prime Minister, Theresa May who has supported the three local councils in their talks over the last couple of years.
A presentation at a meeting with South Ayrshire Council last week announced the update from key partners Spirit AeroSystems moving in the right direction. Calum McPhail, Economic Development Co-ordinator said: “The core aim of the centre is to increase Scottish supply chain content in the aerospace centre, and to support development of the small satellite parking.
“The airport and council are working with an international corporation to develop the spaceport launch system. An MPA has been signed and an MOU will be signed later this month to work out the operation model and joint business case.”
The Ayrshire Growth Deal covers several projects but the Prestwick proposals are believed to be at the forefront of the £325 million growth plans.
