Manchester’s Narco Kings: Blood and Fear, C5, 10pm

THE stories of some of Britain’s most powerful gangsters, looking at how they came to control the drugs trade in four of the nation’s biggest cities. The first edition reveals how brothers Dessie, Dominic and Damian Noonan rose to dominate Manchester in the 1980s and ’90s, taking over the doors of the city’s clubs such as the Hacienda to control the supply of drugs. Featuring interviews with a bare-knuckle boxer, a bouncer who used to run with their gang, and the police who were on their trail.

WWI’s Secret Shame: Shell Shock, BBC2, 9pm

IN the aftermath of the First World War, soldiers who sacrificed so much were actually called cowards when they came home. Paralysed by fatigue, anxiety and extreme terrors, they were the victims of shell shock. In this one-off documentary, Dan Snow examines the devastating impact the Great War had on the mental health of millions of soldiers, discovering how the shell shock of that conflict has evolved into the cases of post-traumatic stress disorder that servicemen and women are affected by today. The presenter talks to veterans of the Second World War, the Falklands and Afghanistan about their experiences, and asks military psychiatrists and experts why the authorities are still struggling to help the psychiatric casualties of war.

24 Hours in A&E, Channel 4, 9pm

CAMERAS return to the A&E department of St George’s in south-west London for a new series. In the opening episode, Rich, 35, is airlifted to the hospital after being involved in a high-speed collision on the M25, and doctors are concerned when they discover he has lost feeling below his chest and can’t move his legs. Meanwhile, 36-year-old Justin has been involved in a life-threatening accident while playing football and he is put in an induced coma while a CT scan is carried out, which reveals a potentially life-threatening bleed on his brain.
