YOUNG carers in Ayrshire have received a £2,500 donation to help to fund learning development.

A fundraising initiative generated by residents and staff at South Ayrshire sheltered housing units, managed to raise the funds through a range of activities and events including trips to the top of Ben Lomand, coffee mornings and bingo events at night in Dundonald.

The donation was made to theSouth Ayrshire Carers Centre and aims to help young carers who are unable to afford luxuries such as laptops.

The aim is to help each individual with their education and assist them in being able to progress their studies and further their careers.

Portfolio Holder for Lifelong learning, Councillor William Grant explained that the kind gesture would help change lives.

He said: “By having the right toolsavailable to make the most of their education and careers, this donation will help people to realise their personal goals and I’d like to thank everyone involved for their tireless efforts.

“We’re committed to helping young people overcome disadvantage and reach their full potential and this fantastic fundraising drive will leave a lasting legacy.”

Young Carers Information and Advice Worker Kayleigh Hamilton expressed her delight andappreciation for the money that had been donated.

She said: “Thank you to all the Sheltered Housing Units who put in such a great effort to raise funds for our Young Carers. I am very humbled; our Young Carers will benefit so much from this.”

Young people at the South Ayrshire Carers Centre agreed: “The laptop will help me with my homework and also to help research mum’s condition, I can finally study on my career.”
