THE FORMER Royal Bank of Scotland building in Prestwick has seen the first stirrings of life after last year’s closure.

The RBS was joined by the town’s Bank of Scotland and Clydesdale Bank in a rapid series of closures around the Cross.

Now an application has submitted to sub-divide the ground floor of the Main Street property into two separate units. The building was purchased from RBS by Linea Developments Ltd .

The applications states that the sub-division would maintain the existing footprint, with no extension or additional floor space being created. Minor work such as replacement screens and new doors, infill work form part of the application, which was lodged with South Ayrshire Council planners this month.

Car parking spaces at the rear of the property would be for the sole use the property. RBS announced the closure of the Prestwick branch in March 2017, citing a fall in physical transactions at the bank.

A spokesman for RBS said at the time: “The way people choose to bank with us has changed radically over the last few years.

"Since 2011 we have seen the number of transactions decline by 32 per cent in Prestwick and 34 per cent in Troon. These customers are actively choosing to bank in different ways.”
