A firearms scare had police rushing to Ayr Main Street last night.

Officers received a report at around 8pm on Tuesday, September 12 that there had been an incident with a firearm.

Rumours soon spread on social media after police vehicles were seen racing towards the town centre.

One local resident posted on Facebook: “What’s going on in Ayr? Police incident support vans just flew by my house with lights and sirens going heading towards the town.”

Another member of the public wrote: “Anybody know what’s going on in Ayr High Street? Apparently a shooting, police everywhere.”

Police have since confirmed that the call they received was untrue and that there was no incident in the town centre.

A spokeswoman from Ayr Police Station said: "Police Scotland can confirm that they received a report of a firearms incident at Main Street in Ayr around 8pm last night.

“Police attended and carried out exhaustive enquires and quickly established that it was a false call made to police – there were no firearms and no injuries to any persons.”
