A MESSAGE in a bottle found on Prestwick Beach has lead to a search for ‘Sarah’.

Discovered by Elissa Wilson during a clean of the beach, the ‘love’ note – written by Sarah – tells of the celebration of her and her partners first wedding anniversary on the Isle of Skye, and their “love for the outdoors”.

It reads: “Today in celebration of our first wedding anniversary, I write you this love note in a bottle. In celebration of our love of the outdoors and for this love for both to last forever, we throw it into the sea from Skye, Scotland.”

Speaking to the Ayr Advertiser, Elissa said: “It was a really miserable day last Saturday during the litter pick and we were just about to [go home] when I found the bottle among the seaweed.

“We couldn’t get the note out of the bottle without a pair of tweezers, so I took it home.

“There isn’t a date on it, so it could have been years ago that it was thrown in the water, or it could have been last week – there isn’t a surname or the partners name so all we have is the name Sarah.

“It’s a very personal declaration of love. They may be disappointed it never left Scottish shores, but it’s a fair journey down the west coast from Skye to Prestwick.”

Elissa took to Facebook in an attempt to trace Sarah and to tell her how far her message had travelled – the Facebook post has been shared over 850 times, reaching as far as Australia.

This isn’t the first time a ‘message in a bottle’ has been discovered on Prestwick Beach.

In June 2008, then nine-year-old Lauren Drummond was walking along the beach with her dad, when she found a bottle lying near the rocks – at the time she took it home and wrote a message back to the person who originally send the letter.

She threw the glass bottle back into the sea and three weeks later a woman walking along the shore at Campbelltown discovered her message.

At the time, Lauren said: “I don’t really know where I got the idea, I just saw the bottle and thought it would be really good [to write back].

The message read: "Hi my name is Lauren. I found this bottle on the beach and have thrown it back with this message in it. If you find it, please write back to me telling me who you are, how old you are and where and when you found it.”

The next Prestwick Beach clean will take place on Saturday, June 30 at the old swimming pool from 9.30am.
