TROON churchgoers will be swapping the dulcit tones of their regular minister for a fellow American this summer.

The Rev David Prentice-Hyers of Troon Old Parish Church last week made a return to native Elizabethtown, Tennessee, where he will take the place of the Rev Dr Brian Wyatt, who will take over his duties in Troon.

They will trade pulpits, homes and even pets for four weeks, with David based at the First Presbyterian Church.

Brian, who has wife Sarah and son Wallace (10) with him said: “I have been in the ministry now for 18 years and David and I were at university together.

“David’s parents live near the church and have had very little time with their grandchildren. He came up with the idea of doing a swap for a few weeks. Troon is a beautiful place and I’m excited about getting to know people.

“We will swap houses, cars, churches and pets.

“We will take care of their dog Molly and they will look after our dog and cat. I have Scots heritage. Hopefully in my sermons I can share a little of what I am.”

David, whose wife Mary Elizabeth and children have accompanied him, said: “Sometimes you learn more about your home by leaving home.”
