CONCERNS are growing as another ‘deliberate’ fire took hold of gorse grass in Troon.

At the recent Troon Community Council, Community Councillor Nicky Power brought forward the issue to Sgt Dean Barlas of Troon Police Office, about a fire that was set at the golf course near to Marr College.

He asked: “I was wondering if you were aware of the fire raising on the golf course?”

Sgt Dean Barlas replied: “There have been a number of reports of fire raising – there was one up at Fullarton Woods and one close to the station, but I wasn’t aware of the one on the golf course.

Nicky said: “It was near to Marr College at the gorse bushes.”

Sgt Barlas added: “Given the position of it, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was linked to those who have been setting off the fire extinguishers and vandalising the Marr pitches – there are groups of youths that we are trying to identify.”

Furthermore, on Thursday, June 7 at around 9.35pm, Scottish Fire and Rescue (SFRS) we called to reports of a fire near to Barassie.

One fire engine was sent to the area, where firefighters put out the fire involving the grass within the area.

A spokeswoman for SFRS said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 9.34pm to reports of a fire near the B746, Barassie.

“Operations Control mobilised one fire engine to the area where firefighters extinguished the fire involving grass. Crews left the scene at 9.58pm after ensuring the area was made safe.”

A Troon Neighbourhood Watch scheme has also been set up as a ‘deterrent’ to keep people aware of what is happening in the area.

This will be a Troon wide initiative where residents are encouraged to contact 101 of any crimes and to make residents aware of what is happening in their area.
