GLENDOUNE Community Association will continue their free packed lunch scheme for children who need it this summer.

The initiative was piloted last year after concerns were raised that children in deprived areas were returning to school noticeably thinner.

The Association runs throughout the year and are looking for more volunteers and to engage with older members of the community.

Last summer Glendoune Community Association created a sports hub the kids could attend and provided a free lunch after their activities.
The issue was discussed at the Girvan Town Team.

Wendy Nibloe, Chairwoman of the Glendoune Community Association, said: “We are looking for volunteers this summer to help out at our packed lunch scheme and throughout the year.

“We have 100 children coming to us and we really need helpers throughout the day to look after them, entertain them and play with them.

“The Glendoune Community Association is open from Tuesday to Friday. The meals are all provided by South Ayrshire Council.

“We are hoping to branch out the the elderly and invite them in for a cup of tea and encourage the young people to spend quality time with them. I want the whole community to be brought back into the project.”

South Ayrshire Council backed the scheme last year which was also supported by the Milestone Christian Fellowship.

So far children from Girvan and South Carrick and North Ayr have benefited from the pack lunches scheme throughout the school holidays.

Packed lunches were provided at the Glendoune Association’s sports hub which ran every Friday at the Muga from 2pm until 3pm.
