THE doubling of funding to support walking and cycling has been welcomed locally.

Last week, Transport Minister, Humza Yousaf announced that £36 million is to become available through the Community Links Fund to encourage the country to be an “active nation”.

He said: “We want Scotland to be an active nation, where people lead healthier and more active lifestyles.

“Cyclists often tell me they want to see more safe cycling infrastructure, which I fully endorse and is one of the reasons why this is the highest amount we’ve ever invested in the Community Links Fund.

“We want this extra money to create pleasant and safe routes which make it easier for people of all ages to choose to walk and cycle as part of their everyday lives.

“This is a great opportunity for organisations to bring forward projects that will encourage people to make active travel a bigger part of their daily lives and realise the health and environmental benefits that come with it.

Colin Clark, of South Ayrshire Paths Initiative (SAPI), added: “This increase in funding from the Scottish Government is a great opportunity for not just South Ayrshire Council but also for our neighbouring councils to invest in a regional, collective and sustainable active travel network for all of us.

“Potentially if adopted it could assist in the improvement of the physical and mental health outcomes of our whole community - from school children through to our more senior residents of Ayrshire.

“This could be achieved by making walking and cycling more accessible and safer to all, opening up the chance to enjoy the amazing surroundings which our region offers.

“This possible enhancement to our current active travel asset would result in further environmental and economic benefits for all of Ayrshire.

“SAPI hope this opportunity is grasped by all possible investors to build a positive statement for our generation and beyond.”

John Lauder, National Director for Sustrans Scotland, welcomed the announcement explaining the funding would “create safe and accessible walking and cycling routes across the country.”
