THE Day o the Deid project will be one of the schemes looking for votes in Tesco Bags of Help in May and June at Ayr and Prestwick stores.

From Tuesday, May 1 until Saturday, June 30 shoppers will be given tokens, by their cashier, and encouraged to vote for their favourite community project by placing the token in one of the units near the front door.

There will be three programmes to choose from at Tesco on High Street, Ayr, Whitletts Road, Maybole Road, Prestwick Road and Main Street, Prestwick.

The initiative which wins the most votes receives £4000 funding. Some £2000 and £1000 is also available for the projects which come second and third respectively.

Founder and organiser of Day o the Deid procession, Leona Stewart, said: “We are one of the projects looking for votes in the Tesco Bags of Help throughout May and June.

“If we achieve the most votes we will be awarded £4000 which will go towards the event in October.

“We will be at Burns Fest this Saturday to tell people about Bags of Help with props. We will be there for most of the afternoon walking around handing out leaflets.

“On Saturday, June 9 we will be teaming up with The Gaiety and running an exhibition at Rozelle called Day o the Dame. This will highlight the heritage of The Gaiety.

“There will be the opportunity to create panto dame costumes which will be part of the procession in October. The procession will be on Sunday, October 28.

“Afterwards we plan to have a ceilidh or some sort of after party for everyone to enjoy for another hour or so featuring SambaYaBamba.

“There will be workshops for Day o the Deid throughout the year. We will invite the schools to them as well. Last year I went around the schools to give them banner kits so they could come to one of the sessions during the school holidays and design props.

“This is about brining in different creativity and culture to Ayr so please vote for us.”
