ALL-conquering Paul Foster has cemented his place in Scottish sporting folklore following another stunning display in the coveted Commonwealth Games.

The Troon man will return home from the Gold Coast event to a hero’s welcome today (Tuesday), clutching gold and silver medals, just four years on from being a standard bearer for Team Scotland at the Glasgow Games.

Foster teamed up with longtime partner Alex “Tattie” Marshall, Derek Oliver and Ronnie Duncan to land the men’s fours title for a second time.

They defeated hosts Australia on their own patch with a stellar display.

This glorious success sparked huge celebrations at the event and came just four days after Foster and Marshall had secured a silver medal in the Pairs competition against Wales in what was another classic final.

The Scots had to overcome the odds to triumph in the Fours event, which was watched globally by millions around the world.

They trailed by two shots going into the final end shootout and were facing what looked like a tough task.

But Foster, Marshall and co showed some great coolness under pressure, playing in front of a partisan crowd and picked up a four to seal what was an epic victory in a cliffhanger final.

Four years ago Foster took the Fours and Pairs title on a wave of patriotism at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games but was determined for yet more glory Down Under, preparing intensively for the challenge throughout the past couple of years and leaving no stone unturned in their quest to do well again.

The Games is seen the pinnacle of a bowler’s career.

Foster is also a five-time World Indoor Bowls champion, having last won that coveted title in 2017.

Victory helped make Marshall Scotland’s most decorated Commonwealth Games athlete of all-time and took over that mantle from the great Allan Wells, winner of the 100m title at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow.

Paul is joint-second with Wells and Neil Fachie on four golds and a silver.

Foster was still basking in the glory as he spoke to Sportscene before leaving Australia and said: “It makes it even sweeter the fact that we beat the Australians on their own turf in the final.

“To have the same amount of golds as Alan Wells is incredible and to be part of the biggest Scottish haul of medals overseas in the Commonwealth Games is also amazing, I have really enjoyed being part of Team Scotland.”
