MEMBERS of the Kyle and Carrick Civic Society are backing the Ayr Advertiser’s campaign to prevent offices and flats being developed on Ayr’s Riverside.

After it was revealed last September by architects that remains of 18th and 19th century Ayr were discovered under the Riverside Block residents have opposed council plans and are backing our campaign.

Findings include medieval pottery, timber, other materials and remains of the Kings Arms Hotel, which many feel could form a heritage centre, on the site, instead.

Writing on behalf of the Civic Society, President, Michael Hitchon said:

“The site is at the heart of the mediaeval centre of The Royal Burgh of Ayr and surrounded by stone buildings including 1-3 New Bridge Street, Auld Brig, New Brig and Ayr Town Buildings with its elegant steeple designed by Thomas Hamilton.

“The site is in Ayr Central Outstanding Conservation Area and requires buildings of quality and sensitivity, structures of which we may all be proud. This is not one.

“The proposed building is too large and dominating in such a sensitive setting, it does not respect any of the surrounding structures, is bland, repetitive and dull.

“Flat roofs are not to be recommended in Ayrshire, furthermore they make for uninteresting rooflines. The windows are out of proportion and could be better by following classical guidelines.

“The High Street elevation is disappointing, too domineering and needs breaking up to reflect the pattern of the earlier plots. A High Street entrance is needed.

“Where are the vennels that were to be included? The river elevation could be improved with the incorporation of the masterplan twin gables, indeed there are too many deviations from the masterplan guidelines.

“The building seems to tower two storeys above the buildings on Old Bridge Street. We recommend that South Ayrshire Council refuse the Application.”
