SUTHERLAND House in Ayr marked their diamond anniversary in style with more than 170 charity members, volunteers and special guests.

Enable Ayr and District, based at Sutherland House, are a charity for those with a learning disability. They celebrated 60 years of supporting families and individuals at a special Anniversary Dinner held at Western House Hotel.

Guests included Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran, Sheriff Iona Sara McDonald, and South Ayrshire Council Provost, Helen Moonie.

The Lord Lieutenant brought with her a letter from the Queen congratulating the charity, its volunteers and members, for their contribution to the local community over such a long period of time.

From its base at Sutherland House, Enable Ayr and District, currently run well established social activities principally during weekday evenings.

The charity are not content to limit their operations simply to social activities but are looking to the future by adding a Mentoring and Befriending Project to help those adults with a learning disability, engage much better with their own community.

Project Manager, Christine McMillan, said: “Our volunteers give their time generously and freely to help and support those adults with a learning disability make the most of their lives. Without volunteers the charity would not exist and our ambition is to be a robust, relevant part of our local community for at least another 60 years.”

Elizabeth Fyall, Branch Secretary asked people for their memories of the branches activities over the years.

She said : “We have official records and some memories, [from Sutherland House] but there must be people in the town whose families have been involved in years past, and we would love to hear their stories. It would also help us properly thank everyone in the community for all their efforts.”
