A MAN from Mossblown who slid down a chimney ended up as the unexpected star on the Michael McIntyre Big Show on Christmas Eve.

John McGill was told he was going down to London for a meeting. When he was there his friend received a text message saying they were needed to a take part in a Guinness Book of Records project.

The 28-year-old was told they were trying to see how many Santas they could fit down the chimney. But John was not aware he had been set up by his parents who had arranged for him to sing on the Michael McIntyre Big Show Christmas special.

Dressed as a Santa, John slid onto the stage of the Theatre Royal in London.

Speaking about his experience, John said: “I had no idea what was happening. It wasn’t until I saw my mum and dad in the audience that it finally clicked what was going on and that it was me who was getting wound up.

“I thought all the people who were dressed as Santa were coming down the shoot. It felt that I was sitting at the bottom of the slide for ages as I was so confused and wondering what was happening.”

Once the aircraft mechanic had come to terms with reality he was whisked away to rehearse.

John continued: “I had two hours to rehearse the song with the choir but I also had to get my hair and makeup done and I was interviewed so there was not a lot of time to practice. I was worried I would forget my words but I loved it.

“It was a surreal experience but such a privilege to perform on the Theatre Royal. Even when I was watching it on TV, it was as if I was watching someone else.”

As well as his full time job, John has been involved with Loudoun Musical Society for 10 years.

He added: “I didn’t really get into performing until I was 17 and it has grown over the past decade. I go with the flow.

“If anything were to come up I’d love it.

“Whether that is on the big stage in London or in Ayr I don’t know. I’d like to thank everyone for their support.”
