A MAN has been sentenced to six months in jail for assaulting police officers.

Alexander Bryden, of Charlotte Street, Ayr, pleaded guilty to assaulting police officers whilst in the execution of their duty.

The court was told that he repeatedly kicked an officer on the body, nipped him on the leg and struggled violently.

The 44-year-old appeared before Sheriff John Montgomery at Ayr Sheriff Court last week.

Depute Fiscal Andrew Lazzarin explained: “At 10:35am, the police were contacted in relation to another matter and attended the property.

“The officers found the accused sleeping in his bed.

“And when he was arrested on that matter, he was not too pleased.

“Once he was dressed, the police tried to place hand cuffs on him. The accused said, “you’re not putting half cuffs on me” whilst striking the police officer on the leg and the torso.

“The officer managed to get one handcuff on him.

“The accused was restrained, handcuffed and taken to Ayr Police Station where he was cautioned and charged.”

Speaking on his behalf, defence solicitor Stephen Maxwell said: “My client has an extensive previous where custody is inevitable.”

Sheriff Montgomery sentenced Bryden to six months imprisonment.
