MORE than 150,000 spectators assembled on Ayr's Low Green at the weekend to watch the Scottish International Airshow grace the skies.

Some 110,000 people gathered on Saturday alone to watch the SAR Helicopter & RNLI Role Demonstration, RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team and the Typhoon.

Sunday proved to be more challenging with poor viability forcing some displays to cancel. But the event was still a success with the Red Arrows closing the show with a spectacular performance.

Doug Maclean, event manager, said: "I think it was awesome. Sunday was a real challenge because the weather was against us for most of the day.

"But it was just wonderful. We had some special guests there on Sunday who could see a lot of happy people. The atmosphere was just phenomenal.

"Overall the airshow was a success. Saturday was fantastic and we broke our own record for attendance with 110,000 people there.

"In the last three years we have had 120,000 people attend over the two days. Sunday was a different story with very challenging conditions.

"Some of the displays had to be cancelled but there was still a memorable performance from those who took part once the rain began to clear.

"We had the American Armed Forces there for the first time which made the event even more special for some people.

"I took the two Mustang pilots to the family tent for the children to get their pictures taken. We still managed to attract some 40,000 on the Sunday many left throughout the day but 30,000 people watched the Red Arrows.

"We are confident to say we had more than 150,000 spectators there over the two days. We have done really well.

"We will meet with South Ayrshire Council in the next couple of weeks as we are already planning 2018."

Organisers are hoping to strike a deal with the council for the next three years and to make the airshow along term fixture in the town.
