A MARRIED couple are set to return to the RAF base where they meet over 30 years ago.

Ayr woman, Sandra Black, met her husband at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire in 1983, where they were both members of the Royal Observer Corps.

Sandra’s husband, Alan, was in 24 Group Edinburgh, and Sandra was in 25 Group Ayr.

Currently living in Edinburgh, Sandra and Alan are returning to Scampton to see the first ever Scampton Airshow, which is the first airshow to be held in Lincolnshire since the Waddington Airshow in 2014.

Discussing his time at RAF Scampton, Alan said: “Sandra and I were both part-time members of the Royal Observer Corps, which was affiliated to the RAF.

“During the war, the ROC had an aircraft spotting role, as seen in the Battle of Britain. During the 1960s the ROC changed over to a nuclear reporting role. In the summer of 1983 we both attended a training camp at RAF Scampton during the same week.

“One of my friends knew one of Sandra’s friends and on July 26 we were introduced to one another.

“It was very much a telephone romance and we were engaged by October that year.”

The couple married July 27, 1985 and have been married for 32 years, with five daughters and two grandchildren.
