SOME 136 houses will be developed in Symington on the land opposite Townend Terrace and Main Street.

Proposals were approved by South Ayrshire's regulatory panel and include 34 affordable homes, access roads and associated landscaping and infrastructure.

Tony Aitken, one of the applicants, said: "We have worked with the offices of the council. Our aim is to improve the area and I hope we have exemplified this.

Cllr Ian Canvana said: "These plans are most agreeable with 34 affordable houses planed."

Cllr Mary Kilpatrick asked: "What affect will this have on the local schools?
It was made clear that primary schools in the area would be able to take on more pupils.

Cllr Peter Convery added: "It has been a long journey. You have worked very hard and I believe this project is going to be fruitful."
