A TEENAGE thug threatened to ‘cut’ a 15-year-old boy with a knife before starting to chase him, because he didn’t have a lighter.

Dylan Lindsay, owned up to assaulting the boy on January 23, this year at Gordon Terrace, Ayr. On March, 10 he assaulted and threatened two of his friend with a knife at the Kyle Centre in Ayr.

Goodwin was charged with having a blade on him that same day having previously been released on bail. The 18-year-old appeared from custody before Sheriff Desmond Leslie at Ayr Sheriff Court last week.

The court heard how the first incident took place at 3.30pm. The 15-year-old had left Ayr College and was walking home.

Depute fiscal, Kevin Jarvis, said: “Lindsay was with another man. Both of them stopped and asked the boy for a cigarette lighter but he did not have one.

“Lindsay put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a lock back knife. He said ‘are you playing me’? and held the knife in front of the complainer.

“Lindsay told the complainer ‘I will cut you’ before asking about cigarettes. The complainer didn’t have any and started to walk away. Lindsay tried to follow him for a few steps but allowed the teenager to walk off.

“CCTV captured the incident. Police were called and questioned Lindsay. He replied ‘I don’t even own a knife’.

“The second incident happened in Ayr town at 2pm. Lindsay was walking past a shop [in the Kyle centre] when he spotted the two witnesses, who are 16 and 18.

“Lindsay asked the 18-year-old man to come and speak to him outside the shop. They used to be friends but the conversation got aggressive. The complainer lunged towards Lindsay after he was confrontational.

“Lindsay pulled out a knife and lunged at the complainer stating I am going to stab you’. The 16-year-old girl came out of the shop and said she was going to call the police. Lindsay made off.”

Speaking on his behalf, defence solicitor, Peter Lockhart said: “This is a young man who had gone off the rails. He had difficulties with alcohol abuse. From an early stage he cooperated fully and both knives were recovered.

“At 18 years old he has had a chaotic life style and knows he needs to turn his life around.”

Addressing the dock, Sheriff Leslie, said: “You have already been given a chance as you were placed on a community payback order but breached by having a knife.

“What alarms me is that having been granted bail, you then rearmed yourself with a knife. You had total disregard for your bail conditions. You went out of you way to get a knife and threaten two other people.

“There is only one way this can be dealt with and that is with a custodial sentence.”

Goodwin has been sentenced to 18 months in a young offenders institution and will be supervised for six months when he is released.
