QUEEN Margaret Academy held a sports event as part of their journey to become a Unicef Rights Respecting School.
This means they are a school which puts children’s rights at the heart of their practice. Pupils from S1 - S6 have been learning about the 54 Rights that all children have as part of the UN’s convention on the Rights of the Child.
Due to the inclusive nature of Queen Margaret with the supported learning centre base, they decided to focus the month of June on article 23 - the rights of children with a disability.
On Wednesday, June 7 they held a sports event with a difference - pupils got the chance to take part in wheelchair basketball, three legged dodgeball, blind football and various others sports that would demonstrate to pupils in a small way what it’s like to have to overcome the difficulties.
Pupils paid a £1 entry and were awarded points to all the teams. Each team was asked to nominate a local charity to support and the winning team, the Amazing Moanas, decided to support the Ayrshire Hospice.
