HANSEL’S charity shop, HI Street, held a bunting workshop as part of National Volunteer Week.

Local women demonstrated their creative talents at the Prestwick store, with Jan Carr, one of the Ayrshire charity’s volunteers, giving a step-by-step guide to making the colourful chains which are perfect for summer BBQs, parties and children’s bedrooms.

Jan, who was recently crowned Hansel’s superhero, has worked tirelessly to raise money for the charity by making craft items such as aprons and bags for dancing shoes.

Brooke O’Connell, retail fundraising assistant, said: “It was a fantastic afternoon, and everyone had so much fun making the bunting.

“Jan did a great job and is a shining example of someone who has used her skills to help other people. We would be lost without volunteers like Jan who really are helping transform other people’s lives with their hard work and dedication.

“We are looking for more people to join the volunteer team – anyone with a couple of hours to spare a week would be made very welcome. It is a great chance to meet new people, share their talents and learn some new ones.”

Unlike most charity shops, HI Street does not rely on donations of second hand goods.

Ayr Advertiser:

All of the stock is new with the majority showcasing the talents of local designers and crafts people.

It is also a hub for the local community and hosts regular craft workshops like the bunting class. All profits from the store go directly to the charity which supports people living with learning disabilities.

Volunteers must be aged 16 and over, or students undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and they must be relaxed dealing with members of the public.
