AYR'S Station Hotel appears to be abandoned by her owners once and for all and is on the market again for £1 million.

The once iconic building has been the centre of many conversations and questions circling the town for some time with claims that it could collapse within three years if nothing is done to address the situation.

At a public meeting at Ayr Town Hall, former cllr Bill Grant said that he understood the hotel was yet again up for sale.

Candidate Allan Dorans advised that Network Rail had to have experienced people on site overnight to do work to the building.

The Ayr Advertiser Series previously reported that Robin Ghosh, director of Econstruct, has a scheme in mind for student accommodation, retail outlet, council accommodation.

There are concerns that if that doesn’t happen, it will run into disrepair and result in huge bills for the council to keep it safe.

Frank Ward added that the Station Hotel has a Malaysian owner who is not interested in doing anything with it.

Bill Grant responded: "The council are not in the business of buying hotels with public money when the private sector fails. They already have lots of property in the town.

"Holmston House has just been sold, for a nursing home and recreation area, but the council could run into nightmare scenarios with the upkeep of failing old buildings in the town.

"The Station Hotel will become a building at risk. Building Control are engaged with Network Rail to protect passenger safety, but it is a complex scenario."

It was agreed by Mr Grant and Norman McLean, chairman of the Fort, Seafield and Wallacetown community council that members of the organisation should approach the manager with the members concerns.
