LOCAL curlers presented a large sum of £3,800 to South Ayrshire charity, Hansel.

The cheque was given to the organisation following its annual charity Bonspiel.

Over the past 28 years, the curling tournament, organised by Galleon Curling Club, has raised over £90,000 for the Symington-based funding raising group and is on its way to breaking the barrier for £100,000.

Many people who play the sport took part in the event, which was held at Greenacres Curling Rink in Howwood and it was won by the team from Rural Finance, who fought a close battle for the title with John Shepherd Boat Transport.

Shelia McLean, Hansel's fundraising manager, said: "We are delighted to pick up this cheque which will go to very good use, supporting our Connect service, which is transforming the lives of young people with learning disabilities.

"Year after year, Galleon Curling Club and their supporters give so generously of their time and money to help Hansel, they are really inspiring people.

"We cannot thank them enough - I can't believe it will be the 30th Bonspiel in two years time."

Handing over the cheque was Sally Gray, the event co-ordinator, who organised the competition, along with Jim Murdoch and Alison Sloan.

She said: "The Hansel Bonspiel has become one of the highlights of out year and the support and generosity from local curlers and businesses is truly overwhelming.

"We are delighted to present this cheque to such a good cause and out thanks go to everyone involved."
