THE DRIVER of a van which crashed into a bus stop in Prestwick was was previously banned from the roads it is understood.

Police have confirmed they are investigating claims that the driver may have taken ill at the wheel when he collided with the bus shelter last week. 

The Ayr Advertiser Series understands that, before the incident, the man's licence had been taken away from him, on medical grounds.

At around 2pm on Tuesday, March 21 the vehicle collided with the shelter which is near Sainsbury's.He was taken to hospital to be checked following the collision but he suffered no injuries. 

A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal who will decide if this matter should be taken to court.

At the time a spokesperson for Police Scotland, said: "Police were called around 2.05pm on Tuesday, March 21, to a report of a van crashed into a bus stop in Ayr Road, Prestwick.

"An ambulance attended and the man was taken to hospital. One line of enquiry is that the driver of the van may have taken ill at the wheel however police enquiries are continuing.

"Officers are appealing for any witnesses to contact the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Irvine through 101."

As we went to press there were no updates on this situation.
