ANGRY residents of Troon's Commonwealth Drive are up in arms at excessive noise from construction vehicles 'thundering' through their street.

Affordable houses are being developed by Stewart Milne Homes in the area behind Commonwealth Drive at Earl's Green. Work has been going on for at least 18 months.

But HGVs are being accused of speeding through residential areas from 7am until 5pm on a daily basis instead of using the designated access road.

Four homeowners got together to discuss the problems, with the Troon Times, many people in the area have been facing.

They said: "Many of our neighbours cannot get out in the morning to drop their kids off at school or go to work. There is signage at the bottom of the road which says 'no construction vehicles' but they come 'thundering' by anyway."

One couple added: When we moved in, our gardens were under water. This development has been built on a swamp. Water came flooding down from the garden next door as we are at the bottom of a hill.

"We moved down to Troon from Bishopton so we can enjoy our retirement. They were going to build 2500 new homes near our old house but moving away has not done any good."

A resident has says she has twisted her ankle on two occasions because there were no lampposts installed. The householders don't even have a phone line installed and are constantly relying on mobile signals to make calls.

They added: "We don't understand why they cannot use the access road behind our houses. The noise is terrible and they travel at a ridiculous speed. We have spoken to workers about this but they don't listen.

"We don't have anything against affordable housing but the noise and the health and safety hazards are just constant. We have had enough."

A spokesperson for Stewart Milne Homes, said: "To facilitate construction of our latest phase at Earl’s Green, it is not possible to bring construction traffic through the main construction access without passing through roads that are in the ownership of another house-builder.

"While we did seek their permission to do so, they, understandably, refused. Commonwealth Drive, on the other hand, remains a private road within the ownership of Stewart Milne Homes as it is not yet adopted by South Ayrshire Council, and is the only access now available to us to facilitate the construction of future phases at Earl’s Green.

"We do have a robust construction management plan in place to ensure that the roads remain unobstructed and are kept safe and clean.

"If any signs remain on Commonwealth Drive which say “No construction vehicles”, that is simply an oversight on our part and is a throwback to the situation which existed until recently, when it was possible for us to conduct all our construction activities entirely through the main construction access road.

"We will arrange to have these redundant signs removed forthwith. In the meantime, we apologise for any inconvenience caused to residents which we will endeavour to keep to a minimum."
