FAMILY and friends who came together to raise money in memory of Lewis Johnstone who sadly took his own life have presented SAMH with £25,000.

Since his death in September last year the local community have joined together to hold charity events to help fundraise as well as set up a justgiving page online.

Lewis' friends David McCardel and David Armstrong took part in a sailing, cycling and hiking challenge from Prestwick to Arran. Other ladies did a sponsored walk from Muirkirk to Ayr.

The rest of the money raised came from the masquerade ball held in February as well as the just giving page. Sharon and Neil, Lewis' parents are hoping to turn the ball into an annual event.

Speaking to the Ayr Advertiser Neil said: "It was our friend Sarah who asked us about holding a ball in Lewis' memory. They said we could be involved as much or as little as we wanted to be.

"Another group of 10 boys helped put it all together. It was a perfect night. It is unbelievable how the community has together to support us."

Sharon added: "I wish it could be like this the whole time, it has been lovely. There are so many people who have had this experience. Depression and mental health problems are illnesses.

"For us it is more about raising awareness. If you are not well you are not well."

The group presented their cheque to SAMH at David Armstrong barbers in Prestwick on Friday, March 10.

Sharon and Neil will continue to set up a foundation or charity in their son's name.
