ANGRY Ayr residents have hit out at the level of disruption resulting from work by telephone and broadband company, Virgin Media.

Drivers have claimed that the workers have been blocking roads and refusing to let vehicles pass.

Work is being carried out on various street surrounding the town including Ewenfield Avenue, Burness Avenue, Doonholm Road, Woodend Road, Bathurst Drive and the Loaning since January and show no signs of stopping soon.

Workers have cut through the water supply on at least two occasions, caused a power cut and have forced drivers off the road causing damage to their cars.

One resident, who does not wish to be named said: “Am I alone in feeling the current level of disruption due to roadworks in the south of Ayr has reached ridiculous and unacceptable levels, courtesy of Virgin Media?

“The scale of disruption to both pedestrians and vehicles is massive and shows no sign of abating.

“Throughout January all roads used by pupils in the Fenwickland Avenue/Peggy’s Hill area walking to school were affected, with footpaths closed and roadways narrowed to one lane creating a hazard on these dark, wet, windy mornings.

“And it continues, with teams of 20 yellow clad road-workers in fleets of white vans ripping up roads and pavements with no apparent concern for those who use them.

“If this were necessary work to maintain the water or electricity supply to our homes I would understand, but its purpose is to increase the profits of Virgin Media through charging customers who connect to the supply.

“My daughter was forced onto the pavement by them and burst her tyre in the process. All they did was point at it before walking away.”

By the time we went to press, no-one from Virgin Media had responded to our request for a comment.
