A PLEA for a traffic island to be installed on Doonholm Road to protect pedestrians has reached South Ayrshire Councillors.

Concern about road safety has been brewing for some time particularly for children walking to and from school and crossing the road.

It is hoped that a traffic island could be installed between the two Millar Home housing developments just off the A77.

Many feel that it would help kids as well as adults to get from one estate to the other. The issue was discussed at a recent public meeting and Doonfoot Primary School.

Cllr Bill Grant raised the subject with the community council.

He said: "There has been further road safety woes on Doonholm Road, just off the A77 at the Millar Homes.

"I would like to see this stretch of road upgraded particularly with cars going to and from each estate."

Concerns have already been raised for children's safety on Maybole road and another pedestrian crossing is to be installed once the Ayrshire Roads Alliance receive funding from the Education Services.

It is hoped another traffic island or a zebra crossing will sit near the junction of Lauchlanglen Road soon.

This month Ayrshire Police Division launched a road safety campaign which continues to target areas of concern which have been highlighted by residents and Community Councils as well as traffic hotspots.

The areas targeted have included Ayr, Barrhill, Maybole and Girvan.

As part of the campaign, officers have again been visiting schools, raising awareness about road safety issues and providing demonstrations of speed detection equipment.

PC David Markin is the coordinator for the South Ayrshire Road Safety campaign and commented: "A key feature of this campaign is awareness raising and education and in addition to enforcement activity we will be taking the opportunity to speak to road users and local people about road safety in South Ayrshire."
