AYR Renaissance plans to regenerate the Riverside block have been approved by South Ayrshire Council.

The plans were put forward today at South Ayrshire Council at a special planning meeting.

Plans will see the North side of the Riverside block demolished all but the two listed buildings at either side and 8-10 Main Street.

On the South side of the Riverside Block, the M&S, YMCA and old Woolworths will be demolished. Work will take place over five phases.

Proposals at this point are indicative as detailed planning is yet to come.

Ayr Advertiser:

Councillor Ann Galbraith however slammed the decision that will see student accommodation built in the area with a stunning walkway and eateries.

She said: "This is a prime site, I think it is disgraceful letting students in.

"This is an attractive place for people to stay. It is a dreadful idea putting student accommodation in there."

However, Prestwick councillor Hugh Hunter disagreed with Galbraith.

He said: "I actually think student accommodation is a great idea, students and young people bring a real vibrancy to the area."

Councillors were very much impressed with Ayr Renaissance plans put forward by managing directors David Bell and Patrick Dunne.

Councillor Ian Cavana said: "This is a long time coming."

Councillor William Grant said: "It is much needed, really satisfied. This is planning in permission, detailed plans will come."

Councillor Galbraith then explained despite her gripes about student accommodation she thought the idea was 'wonderful' and was '10 years coming'.

Councillors then approved the planning subject to conditions.

it is expected that work on the area could begin as soon as tomorrow.
