CAMPAIGNERS who fought hard to save Malcolm Sargent House are devastated it has been sold.

It was announced that the former children's holiday home has been sold to McCarthy and Stone who will turn the premises into retirement flats.

Eileen Granger, MBE, said: "Well, Malcolm Sargent House is conditionally sold to McCarthy & Stone.

"When I became a volunteer, I never, ever imagined I'd see this day.

"The house will always have a special place in my heart but I can understand CLIC Sargent need to do what's best for their charity, so they can support children like Ross, through their battles against cancer.

"I realise some of my MSH friends might not agree with me, but our memories will always be in our hearts.

"We are moving on to better things, with our new charity, building our new holiday home, and supporting more families than ever, and helping them make special memories."

Billy Herd, who volunteered at the home for a decade, said: "It was inevitable that the House would be sold.

"CLIC Sargent requires the capital to fund the Services required in supporting young people with Cancer.

"I was a Volunteer at the House for 10 years and had many happy memories of the Families, Staff, Fundraisers and Volunteers.

"But Young People and their Families need a holiday after operations and or treatment.

"That is why I support #BUYMSH Appeal in Building a new Holiday House for Young People with Cancer and Life Limiting Illnesses. So lets do it."

But this has not deferred the team from continuing their appeal as they held their valentines day dip on Sunday to continue their fundraising efforts.

Michelle Sharkey also donated £20,000 to the appeal in memory of her daughter Tilly.

Posting on their website BUY MSH said: "We are deeply saddened to hear the news on Tuesday that CLIC Sargent has announced the sale of Malcolm Sargent House to the property developers McCarthy & Stone.

"We had expected this news but it still doesn't make the news any more palatable. Malcolm Sargent House was a haven for thousands of families suffering with cancer all over the UK and a landmark to everyone in the local community where they could feel part of a charity, right on their doorstep.

"It was a vital service provision which should NOT have been closed.

"Nonetheless, rather than dwelling on the negatives, it's time for us as a new Ayrshire charity, alongside our strong community to drive forward our plans to build a new Malcolm Sargent House in Ayrshire; A new 21st century sustainable holiday house encompassing all the love and memories from the old."
