CAMBUSDOON Sports Club are looking to attract partner participation and support from communities across Ayr to help them regenerate the facilities.

Created in 1869, the club moved to Burns Wicket in Alloway in 1997 promoting bowling, cricket and football and attracts members of all ages but need to replace the sand based Astro-turf on the pitch.

Former members of the cricket section have gone on to become professional players with one even becoming the captain of England.

Sam Hornell, President of the club attended the Ayr and Doonfoot community council to discuss the options available to those who become a member.

He said: "Our mission is to become a social hub within the local community. We are a members based organisation and those in charge are all volunteers.

"There are four changing rooms, club house, private catering and meetings rooms available for hire."

Cambusdoon currently has 640 members with 300 'playing' members and 340 'non playing' members but they are trying to attract more members from the rural communities.

Since 2010 the club has increased in all core sports. Bowling has increased by 28 per cent, cricket by 36 per cent and football has doubled by over 100.

Over 50s are being encouraged to participate in the walking football.

Sam continued: "Last year we held our inaugural beer festival where we raised more than £10,000 for various charities.

"But we need money to replace sand based Astro-turf. We certainly need to update our pitch. We want a system that will allow us a long term future and ensure we stay active.

"We would love to increase our 'playing members' to 500 and our overall membership to 100. Basically we want to expand in the community."

Members of the public can attend matches for all three sports for free.

Donald Wilson said: "I think it is a fantastic club. I grew up with it and it is great to hear it is still in our community.

"One on the reasons I left was because it is not pro active but now it seems to be more stable.

Brendan Ferguson added: "It is a club which has so much potential. It has turned amateurs into professionals and world class leaders."

So far the ages of members can range from 5-90 years old. There are 225 under 18s most of which are under 14.

There are roughly 90 kids taking part in the summer time with the Ladies Scottish Club held at Cambusdoon for the last three years.
