IRVINE’S MP has called on the UK Government to give lift-off to a spaceport at Prestwick Airport – after a deal was struck with a spaceport in Texas.

Dr Philippa Whitford said a memorandum of understanding brings the reality of a spaceport in Ayrshire a step closer.

The Central Ayrshire politician says UK Government support for the initiative through the Ayrshire Growth Deal would bring a huge boost to the UK aerospace industry.

And it would also mean a massive boost to the Ayrshire economy.

It was back in January that Dr Whitford first put forward the case for Prestwick’s bid to house the UK’s first spaceport.

And the bid even sparked the interest of Captain Kirk himself – actor William Shatner – after the debate was raised in the House of Commons.

At Prime Minister’s Questions last week, Dr Whitford also welcomed leaders of the Rice Space Institute and Houston Space Port who met at the Parliamentary Space Committee Winter Reception.

Speaking this week, she said: “The signing of an historic agreement between Prestwick Airport, Rice Space Institute and Houston Spaceport, brings the reality of Prestwick Spaceport a step closer.

“While our strength in aerospace is clear, Ayrshire also has strengths in life sciences and specialist manufacturing, including premium food and drink.

“There is a real opportunity for Ayrshire.

“In the absence of the Prime Minister, I wanted to secure an assurance from the Leader of

the House that the UK Government is committed to the development of the Growth Deal for Ayrshire.”

Dr Whitford added: “As well as building on the success of the area’s key industries, the plans seek to capitalise on the region’s existing infrastructure and natural assets, enhancing the tourism opportunities of our heritage sites, hotels, leisure facilities and stunning coastline.

“Having secured support from the Scottish Government last week, I call on the UK Government to give the AGD its full consideration.

“Once both Governments are on board, formal discussions can begin with a view to securing the necessary funding.

“The AGD is ambitious in its aims but needs financial support and impetus at government level to succeed.

“I am pleased to have been able to raise the issue in the Chamber today.”

Dr Whitford also revealed: “Together with my fellow Ayrshire MPs Corri Wilson, Alan Brown and Patricia Gibson, I plan to include the AGD at a special Ayrshire showcase event in Westminster in the New Year.”
