A SELF employed singer collided with a vehicle as she emerged onto Holmston Road after a night of drinking with a friend.

Maria Rice, of Barngove, Coylton, admitted driving the car over the limit, dangerously, failing to keep control of it before crashing into another car and damaging it on August 19 this year.

The 54-year-old owned up to failing to provide two specimens of breath at Saltcoats Police Office on the same night. She appeared before Sheriff Mhari Mactaggart at Ayr Sheriff Court last week.

Depute fiscal Scott Toal, said: "The accused's vehicle emerged from Millbrae and collided with the side of the other vehicle. She continued to drive along the road. Her lights were not on.

"The complainer followed her and spoke to her. He noticed that she was staggering and contacted police who attended 15 minutes later. When they spoke to Rice, her speech was slurred.

"While on route to the police office, she produced a plastic bottle with red wine to take a drink from it before it was removed from her. She was cautioned and charged."

Speaking on her behalf, defence solicitor Mr Alexander, said: "She is a self employed singer. On a bad week she makes £100 and on a good week up to £300.

"She had been at a friends house. She can't explain why she did not leave her car. There is a background of depression and anxiety. I can say that because I have seen letters from her doctors.

"She hopes all this can be dealt with today. Of course she can be disqualified."

Addressing the dock, Sheriff Mactaggart said: "I appreciate that you want this dealt with today but I need some more information about your situation with alcohol."

Rice has been disqualified from holding or obtaining a drivers licence. Her sentence has been adjourned until next month.
