Tarbolton Primary School has been named 'Best Breakfast Club in Scotland' at the Kellogg's Breakfast Club Awards.

The small primary school in the heart of South Ayrshire impressed the judges who quickly realised just how important the club has become to the local community since it started two years ago.

Ayr Advertiser:

Tarbolton primary is a rural school and public transport can be limited so if parents miss the early bus to work it could spell disaster. The breakfast club means parents can get out of the door quickly without their children missing out on breakfast.

Ayr Advertiser:

Enjoying a hearty breakfast at the club is having some real benefits for pupils — concentration levels are up, the children have much more energy and are even learning new culinary skills.

Kellogg’s has invited staff and several of the children down to London for a special awards ceremony on Tuesday, November 22. Not only will they pick up their award at the Palace of Westminster but they will also receive a cheque for £1,500.

Councillor Margaret Toner said: “I am so happy Tarbolton Primary School has picked up this prestigious award. The school has bent over backwards to keep the club going while a new school is being built and I am glad this has been recognised by Kellogg’s.

“The children are much more engaged when they get to class and parents are able to leave for work on time so it’s a win win situation. We have other breakfast clubs who also do a fantastic job but for Kellogg’s Tarbolton primary stood out from the crowd….congratulations to everyone at the school.”

Head Teacher Jacqueline Blair said: “I can see a real difference in the children who attend the club. They have grown in confidence are able to concentrate for longer and have made new friends too. Staff all work really hard to ensure the breakfast club happens each day so I would like to take this opportunity to thank them.”

Scott Hume of P6 said: “The club means mum can leave for work on time and I can eat cereal and talk to my friends before school starts. I have been to London before but I am so excited about going again and we will have more money to help the breakfast club."

Megan Samson of P5 said: “I love the breakfast club and sometimes we get to play games too. I can’t wait to go to London.”

Milo Wylie of P2 said: “I like toast and I make it myself. We all help once breakfast is finished and I clean the dishes. We are going to London on the train….I will be too excited to sleep.”

The school will use the prize money to help ensure the club remains free. A new oven could also be bought to help keep those breakfasts coming.
