A MAN who was caught speeding around a cattle market in Ayr in the middle of the night has been fined £400.

Graeme Allan, of Highpark Road, Coylton, admitted driving a car at excessive speed on the A70 near the Craig Wilson Cattle Market on March 15 last year.

The 27-year-old appeared before Sheriff John Montgomery at Ayr Sheriff Court last week.

The court heard how Allan was found in the cattle market driving at 40mph at 12.40am.

Depute Fiscal Scott Toal said: “Police officers were carrying a speed check, his speed was recorded at 81mph. He was stopped, cautioned and charged.”

Speaking on his behalf defence solicitor Glenn Davis, said: “He is very remorseful and is extremely aware that his licence could be lost.

“The road conditions were good and dry with excellent visibility.”

Sheriff Montgomery laughed: “How can you say to me that the road conditions were excellent at 20 to one in the morning?”

Mr Davis replied: “There were street lights there.”

Sheriff Montgomery responded: “There are street lights there because it is dark. Tell your road traffic officer to get a reality check from me.”

Mr Davis responded: “I will pass that on, my lord.”

Montgomery placed five penalty points on Allan’s driving licence, endorsed his driving record as well as fining him £400 which is to be paid by November.
