AFTER months of negotiation, it has been finally confirmed that Ayr Grammar Primary School will be relocated to Ayr Academy.

The decision was made at a leadership panel on Tuesday, April 26 who deemed the exisiting building for learning and teaching and limits the extent of educational experience offered to children.

A report submitted the panel highlights the internal hall is not practical for PE as it is also used for dining/assemblies and has a number of classrooms that are accessed from it.

The space is not sufficient for the school to provide the required two hours PE a week resulting in the school having to access off site facilities.

The school grounds are small and inadequate for the number of children attending the school and parking is very poor. The upper floors are access via a single staircase and there is no lift for children or adults with mobility problems.

Storage and staff accommodation are extremely poor.

Over the years the Council have explored many options in a bid to identify a suitable new site for the school.

The Old Racecourse was previously highlighted as a potential option but this caused upset within the local community and proposals were later refused.

In 2011, as bid to the Scottish Government to have a new Ayr Academy included in Phase 2 of the Schools for the Future programme was successful, which is currently being developed within the Craigie Estate and expected to open in 2017.

Cllr Bill Grant, said: "I welcome this report. It is an excellent report and I am sure many will agree. I was very hopeful that we would get a positive outcome this year.

"There has been positive feedback from the school families. It will continue to improve education for children at Ayr Academy as well as Ayr Grammar."
