MORE THAN £2 million is expected to cover the costs of road improvements across South Ayrshire including carriageways, footways and street lighting.

Developments include resurfacing, surface dress and screed (improving road markings) and will benefit streets including Northfield Avenue, Ayr, Sandyford Road, Mossblown, Barrassiebank Lane, Troon, Wesley Road, Girvan and the A714 between Girvan and Pinwherry.

The decision was made at a South Ayrshire Council leadership panel last Tuesday, April 26.

A survey has been carried out to assess what conditions the roads are in; green being satisfactory, amber requiring further investigation or monitoring and red meaning maintenance operations are likely to be needed.

Speaking to the panel, leader of the council, John McDowall, said: "This will take some time but road conditions are important and improvement must be successful."

Cllr Bill Grant said: "I commend staff for their good work. Improvement is key."

Cllr Rita Miller added: "I think the services are good from the Ayrshire Roads Alliance point of view. It is beneficial for me to. The road into Morrisons is much better which allows me to do my shopping and that works for me.

"We are spending £120,000 on the Troon Golf Open, what will this involve?"

She was informed that work was already underway to ensure pot holes have vanished by the time of the competition.

Cllr Miller continued: "I think it is great we have funding for this but we have got to get the work down."

Troon, Prestwick and Dundonald will see a £1 million boost street lighting system including LED units worth £750,000 to replace the standard lanterns which was also approved by the leadership panel.
