ALL of South Ayrshire businesses can apply to keep their premises open later during The Open this summer - despite police protests against it.

South Ayrshire Council's Licensing Board had to decide whether all licensed premises in South Ayrshire could open until 2.30am while the competition is running between July 10 and July 17.

At the meeting last Thursday, after deciding that the popular golfing tournament was an event of national significance, the Board had to decide which establishments could allowed to stay open.

The group were divided, with Troon Cllr Peter Convery and Kyle Cllr Andy Campbell asking that only the premises in Troon be able to stay open until the early hours of the morning.

Police Scotland's Chief Inspector for South Ayrshire Eileen Taylor said: "In relation to the Open Golf there has been a considerable amount of planning involved.

"There will be more resources in Troon during the day and at night as well.

"We would need to re-examine resources if it were to be South Ayrshire wide."

When asked later on whether she meant that police would rather it was Troon only, CI Taylor responded with 'yes'.

Cllr Convery said: "If other places wish to apply then they are entitled to do so.

"I'd be much more comfortable if it was Troon alone."

Cllr Campbell reiterated this and said: "I'd prefer if it was Troon only and we deal with other applications as they arise.

"Anyone outwith Troon should come before the Board."

They were met with stiff opposition from other councillors.

Ayr East Cllr Ian Douglas gave his opinion: "I would say that given the close proximity of the course to the Prestwick border, that most people will be staying in Prestwick and Ayr.

"So it should be able to be extended throughout South Ayrshire."

Cllr Sandra Goldie who represents Maybole, North Carrick and Coylton said: "I think 2.30am is easy to work with.

"I understand Police Scotland's view, but I really think it should be for the whole of South Ayrshire."

After taking a vote, the board decided five votes to three that the motion be South Ayrshire wide.
