AYR Cricket Club have been hit with a suspended two-match ban following a homophobic comment made on social media.
It happened after Scotland international Majid Haq sent a message to TV weather presenter Sean Batty asking about temperatures in December.
One response from the cricket club made a suggestive, potentially offensive, comment which the club said had come from captain Andi McElnea.
He subsequently apologised, closed down his Facebook and Twitter pages, and said: “There is no excuse for my stupidity.”
Mr Haq had reported the matter to lawyer Aamer Anwar, who said: “One wonders if individuals had not kicked up a fuss on social media whether any action would have been taken.”
However, Ayr Cricket Club made a statement on their website saying they had co-operated with the investigation.
Western District Cricket Union chairman added that all parties had been informed and were happy with the decision to impose a suspended ban.
