FAMILIES of the deceased have taken part in a scheme which enabled more than £4,300 to be raised for a veterans’ fund.

They graciously allowed metal implants to be recovered following cremations at Masonhill crematorium in Ayr, in conjunction with South Ayrshire Council which is a member of the UK Crematoria recycling metals programme.

The process is carried out with respect and dignity, and in accordance with the wishes of family members, with the left-over metals being recycled after the cremation has taken place.

Provost Helen Moonie has since presented a cheque for £4,321 to the benevolent fund of Royal Highland Fusiliers, a regiment which has had an association with South Ayrshire since the 17th century.

It was formed in 1959 by uniting The Highland Light Infantry and The Royal Scots Fusiliers, whose headquarters were at Churchill Barracks in Ayr.

These were close to where the Citadel leisure facility now stands.
Provost Moonie said: “I am glad the money raised will be used to provide care and support to members of the armed services and their families.

"In many cases, long term support is required and we are honoured to help.”
Councillor John McDowall added: “The generosity of the families is very much appreciated.

"And we are thankful that even at a time of grief, they have thought about others.”
