APPRENTICES across South Ayrshire have raised almost £900 for the Nepal Earthquake Disaster Fund.

After seeing the devastating effects of the earthquake Apprentices from South Ayrshire Council felt they had to do something to help those in need.

They have carried out a variety of fundraising activities since April this year including a car washing event, five-a-side football tournament, a sponsored silence, raffle and car boot sale.

They also put themselves up as prizes by offering their services as assistants to the community for the day reaching their grand total of £895.48.

Modern Apprentice, Danielle Boyle, who took part in the fundraising said: “As a team we thought that fundraising for Nepal would be a good idea as the earthquake caused lots of damage and changed people’s lives. We really wanted to help them.”

Disaster struck Nepal, April 25, 2015 killing over 9,000 people and injuring 23,000. The earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest killing at least 19 people.

It also caused another avalanche on in the Langtang valley where 250 people were reported missing.

Hundreds of thousands of people were made homeless as entire villages were flattened across many districts in the area.

Councillor John Hampton, said: “What these Modern Apprentices have achieved is very inspiring.

Every Modern Apprentice that took part is a credit to themselves, their work colleagues and the Council and they have chosen to donate to a very worthy cause.”

Councillor Robin Reid, added: “During the challenge, our apprentices demonstrated their hard work and dedication to the task."
