South Ayrshire youngsters clean up at athletics

SOUTH Ayrshire athletes cleaned up at a championship tournament last week.

Two days of intense competition at the ScottishPower Outdoor Track and Field Championships was on show at Grangemouth International Sports Arena.

Thousands of young athletes from across the country, including pupils from Marr College, Wellington School, Ayr Academy, Belmont Academy, Kyle Academy, Prestwick Academy and Queen Margaret Academy raced for the finish line during the event sponsored by the energy giant.

Double gold success was celebrated by Caroline George of Belmont Academy in Ayr as she was victorious in the Group C (14-15) 100 metres race in a time of 12.7sec and the 200 metres in 25.3sec.

Then in the 200 metres heat her time of 25.18secs broke the championship-best performance of 25.2secs which had stood since 1990

In one of the closest and most exciting finishes of the Championships, Sarah Cassels of Queen Margaret Academy showed great courage and determination to win her gold medal in the Group C (14-15) 1500 metres in

a time of 5min 10.75sec.

Belmont Academy’s Finlay Rae was a clear and very impressive winner of the gold medal in his Group D Under-14 100 metres (4min 28.04).

Silver Medal winners were — Group B (15-17) – Murray Beckwith (Marr College Troon) 2, 100 metres, 11.43sec,

Group C (14)-15 – Rachel Whittle (Marr College) 2, 100m, 12.7sec; 2, 200 metres, 25.33sec. Wallace Graham (Prestwick Academy) 2, 100 metres, 12.35; 2, 200 metres, 25.10.

Bronze Medal winners — Group C – Rachel Whittle 2, High Jump, 1m50; 7 Hazel Jamieson (Prestwick Academy), 1m45. Group D (Under 14) – James Gaffney (Belmont Academy) Shot Putt, 11m62. Group B (15-17) – Claire Taylor 3, 300m hurdles, 48.37.

Other Results — Girls: Group B (15-17)– Ciara Gracie (Queen Margaret Academy, Ayr 4, Long Jump, 4m91; Rachel Hunter (Kyle Academy) 5, Shot Putt, 8m08; Stephanie Dougan (Wellington School, Ayr) 9, 1500 metres, 5min 25.3. Zoe Haddow (Wellington Schoo) heat 300m, 47.11.

Group C (14-15) – Lauren Goldie (Prestwick Academy) 8, Javelin, 11m 18; Rhona McGregor (Wellington School) 3, heat 200m, 8.06sec; Katy Sprang (Craigholm, Glasgow) 6, heat 1500 metres, 5:21.31.

Group D (Under 14) Jemma McSheffery (Belmont Academy) 8, final 800m; Kendal Ross (Prestwick Academy) 4, heat 200m, 27.75sec. Caitlin Gillon (Kyle Academy) 5, heat 100m 14.4; 7 heat, 200m, 320.06; 8, long jump, 3m75.

Boys: Group B (15-17) – Murray Beckwith (Marr College) 4, final 200m; Jonathon Paterson (Ayr Academy) 6, heat 200m, 25.69; 10m, Triple Jump, 10m93; Andrew Rae (Belmont Academy) 6, heat 1500m, 4:30.33.

Group C (14-15) – Adam Steven (Prestwick Academy) 4, heat 800m, 2:20.33. Boys Group D (Under 14) Liam Anderson (Prestwick Academy) 4, Long Jump, 4m02.
