ONE of Ayr United’s most famous sons was honoured on Friday night when a Testimonial in honour of long-serving groundsman Davie Harkness was staged in the Princess Royal Suite at Ayr Racecourse on Friday night.

An audience of 230 including Scotland and former Ayr United boss George Burley attended the successful event.

Former Ayr United and Liverpool ace Stevie Nicol, now the coach with Major League Soccer Club New England Revolution, sent over a filmed tribute to Davie which had a backdrop of the New England stadium behind him.

Among the other presents Davie received were a signed Bury strip from former United fans favourite Glynn Hurst, which was presented by Hurst’s former team mate Andy Lyons.

Former Ayr boss Campbell Money also handed over an Ayr United shirt signed by Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish, who was recently at Somerset Park for a McDonald’s youth tournament.

Burley also gave him a box of tea bags as he was famed for his tea breaks at the ground and Davie was also given a Manchester United shirt signed by Michel Silvestre.

The club gave him a decanter and glasses and Molly Cameron, wife of chairman Lachlan presented Davie’s wife Dot with a bouquet of flowers.

Guest speakers at the event were Irish comedian Stuart Coull, former Scotland international and Hibs and Aberdeen star Joe Harper and Solicitor Richard Hutchison.

The retiring groundsman can now look forward to a hotly anticipated Testimonial Match against Rangers at Somerset Park on July 28
