New signing: Scott Agnew

HOMETOWN boy Scott Agnew spoke of his joy this week after agreeing a new two-year deal to join Ayr United and pledged to help the Honest Men achieve their promotion dream in the coming season.

The 20-year-old former Rangers Youth recruit and Hamilton Accies first team player had been offered a new contract by the Wasps, who qualified for the promotion playoffs but opted for the Honest Men because of the ambition of the Somerset Park club.

A deal on compensation has still to be struck by the clubs as the midfielder is under 23 but Agnew is set to put pen to paper tonight.

Agnew, who lives in Prestwick told Sportscene on Monday: “Alloa offered me a new deal as I was out of contract but I told the manager I planned to sign for Ayr United as I am really impressed at the ambition of manager Brian Reid and the chairman Lachlan Cameron.

“But also I know they are planning to make some more good signings and there are some good players there like Alex Williams and Ryan Stevenson.

“I am excited about having the chance to join Ayr United as I have been here all my days and moved to Prestwick from Ayr a couple of years ago.

“I have been following the club for a long time and went to my first game at the age of 10. My most memorable was the Scottish Cup win against Kilmarnock when Jim Dick scored a great goal.

“My aim is to help Ayr United secure promotion, hopefully by winning the title or if not through the playoffs.

“They are also planning to move to a new stadium so these are exciting times.”

Manager Brian Reid said: “I have been looking at a number of players but as far as Scott Agnew goes nothing has been agreed yet. As the player is under 23, compensation has to be discussed.”

Meanwhile United are still negotiating terms with striker Andy McLaren about a new deal and we will bring you more news of this as soon as we know.

Meanwhile Reid has also completed the signing of talented young defender Lloyd Kinnaird from the Ayr United Football Academy.

The 18-year-old, who has signed a new two-year deal, made his first team debut from the bench in the recent game against Queens Park at Hampden Park.

Kinnaird has been a regular in the Academy’s under 19 side this season and is still eligible to play at that level again next season.

But after some impressive displays for the youth side, he was called up to train with the first team squad towards the end of the season where he has made an impression on United manager Reid.

The Somerset Park boss said “I have been very impressed with Lloyd when he has trained with the first team squad and he is a player who has a lot of potential. Hopefully he will continue his development training with the first team. Although he is still eligible to play for the under 19 squad, I would like to see Lloyd continue his development and challenge for a place in the first team sooner rather than later.”

Under 19 boss John McCaig was a very proud man when Lloyd put pen to paper saying: “Lloyd has worked very hard at his game over the past year and has developed tremendously as a player.

“He always turned in a professional performance, irrespective of what position he is asked to play. He is always willing to listen to advice and learn and put it all into practice.”
