Classy victories for Ayr and Prestwick stars

VETERAN bowler Andy Tennant returned to action in stunning style following two seasons out of the game, taking a huge haul of six for 62 as MGM Prestwick bounced back from a heavy defeat against Dumfries to edge out experienced Renfrew on their own patch in the Scottish National League Second Division on Saturday.

The hosts were all out for 202 with Tennant, sidelined for two years owing to work commitments, steamrollering the home batting attack in his dazzling display.

In reply Prestwick passed their total for the loss of eight wickets, giving them a two-wicket victory.

Sri Lankan professional Dhanuka Pathirana top-scored with 81 and Mark Morrison next best with 31.

On Saturday Prestwick play Edinburgh in the Capital.

Ayr were in vintage form as they chalked up their second win in succession, hammering Uddingston by five wickets at New Cambusdoon in the Premier Division.Professional Matt Horne turned in another outstanding performance, hitting an unbeaten 104 and captain Phil Wilson took three for 39, including the important wicket of Scotland overseas player Ed Cowan.

He then combined with Horne to see Ayr home off the last ball to end up 25 not out off 19 balls.

It was another good all round performance with all bowlers contributing well and Mark Renny and Douglas Johnstone both keeping Horne company in good stands of 47 and 41 before being joined by skipper Wilson to hit the winning runs.

On Thursday Ayr lost by five runs to Ferguslie in the Rowan Cup. Needing six to win Shazad Rafiq who top scored with 53 was bowled off the last ball of the game.

The Cambusdoon XL continued their good start to the season with a convincing victory over Victoria on Sunday.

Niall McCrossin top scored with 100 not out as they were bowled out for 209. McCrossin was well supported by Richie Borland who scored 40. In reply Victoria were bowled out for 169 with seamer Derek Cooper taking 4-45.

In a busy week for the Juniors the U11’s lost narrowly to Greenock while the U13’s beat Prestwick in the Scottish Cup. Ayr scored 115-2 with Seb Stewart and Elliot Speirs both scoring 30 retired and Callum Gordon 29. In reply Prestwick were 74-9.

The U15’s lost away to Greenock on Friday with Seb Stewart scoring 60.This weekend sees the 1st X! with a double header away to Ferguslie in the SNCL in a match sponsored by Malcolm Renny and at home to Stenhousemuir in the Cocksput Cup on Sunday. The match is sponsored by Cattles plc. The Cambusdoon XL are at Bothwell on Sunday.
