Marr slump to crushing defeat

Printer Print Article

Marr 0 Strathmore 30

An under strength Marr side travelled to Forfar on Saturday to face Strathmore in the penultimate game of the season - suffering a shock 30 point defeat.

Strathmore currently sit ninth in the table and Marr would have appeared favourites but Marr are currently facing a slight injury crisis with captain Shaun Little, number eight Barry Kirk, second row Darren O’Conner, winger and back row Jordan Grey, scrum half David Moffat and winger Andrew Watson missing. Marr did have Ryan Kirk back after a prolonged lay off due to a broken hand and second fifteen regulars Kris Kirk and David Drummond both travelled and played the second half.

Marr were not at the races for the second week in a row as a hungrier Strathmore ran out 30-0 winners.

Marr currently sit forth in the table but could be over taken by Lasswade who sit four points behind them with two games in hand both of which are against lower placed opposition. Marr’s game next week against Hawick YM will kick off at 3pm at Fullarton Park.

The second 15 were also back in action on Saturday when they travelled to Allan Glens and the injuries for the first 15 and some call off’s of their own meant that the seconds also travelled with a weakened side with Grant Currie and Gavin Muir making their first starts for the senior side. Marr started strongly and within the first ten minutes were 0-5 up.

A turn over at the tackle saw Marr move the ball right where Douglas Ritson beat his man to touch down in the corner. Marr continued to press throughout the first half but their only other points came from the boot of Steven Galloway who put Marr 0-8 up through a penalty.

Marr’s situation was made worse by the an injury to scrum half Chris Galloway in what was becoming an increasingly bad tempered game saw Marr rearrange their back line with Chris Mills coming on to the wing, winger Chris Helton move to the centre along side Douglas Ritson moved in to Stand off and Steven Galloway move to scrum half. Despite this further disruption Marr held out for most of the second half. Allan Glens finally crossed the Marr line with ten minutes to go to take the score to 5-8.

Marr ten started to fight back and powered their way back into the Allan Glens half and nearly added to their points tally when winger Kris Ferguson went close in the final couple of minutes only to be denied by the touch line. The game finished 5-8, giving Marr a victory in their last game of the season.

This was a good win for Marr with good performances from both the debutants Grant Currie and Gavin Muir. Douglas Ritson and Luke Davies both played well in the centre, and in the back row number eight Steven Logie was man of the match.
