A BALLANTRAE boy has scooped a national photograph competition which aims to inspire fellow asthmatic children.

Conor Robertson, 12, was pictured playing the bagpipes on top of Carlock Hill by his grandfather.

Competition organisers wanted a picture which symbolised someone with asthma not being held back by their illness, and felt Conor's fitted the bill perfectly.

His mother Sharon said: "We're very proud of him and were actually quite surprised he won.

"On the other hand Conor just takes it all in his stride."

Her son, who attends Girvan Academy, has a very active lifestyle - playing rugby, goes canoeing, fishing and takes part in a range of activities with the local scouts.

Many people would think playing these activities, and especially playing the bagpipes, would be impossible with asthma but Sharon says the latter has actually helped Conor's illness.

She said: "It helps to focus his breathing, he's currently plaing for Stranraer and District Band and asmtha doesn't affect him at all."
