Ayr On Alert As Thieves Strike Again
By Roisin McGroarty
SICK thieves targeting lady pensioners during the daytime on Ayr's streets have struck again.
Last week we revealed how two OAPs handbags were stolen from them with an attempted robbery on a third woman.
Now we can reveal another pensioner, an 81-year-old lady, has had her purse stolen from her handbag as she walked around Ayr's High Street at 3.05pm on Saturday, November 22.
The news comes as Ayr police launched their five-week festive crackdown campaign to ensure the town centre is safe for shoppers and revellers yesterday (Monday).
High visibility patrols and additional officers will be cracking down on criminal behaviour, focusing on street crime and shoplifting, with the mounted branch joining community policing and road policing officer to help make Ayr trouble free.
Ayr Sub-Divisional officer and superintendent John Hazlett explained: "This type of initiative has been very successful in recent years and we aim to ensure that success continues. Extra police resources will be patrolling the streets throughout the day and into the evening to ensure that Ayr remains a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors to the town to enjoy their Christmas activities."
